The Weight of Living
Posted on February 17, 2011 by Ric Strangway
As we move through each week I often wonder how you are doing… there’s just so much stuff coming at all of us, isn’t there? I mean, between family, friends, church, work, school there’s so many demands and expectations and responsibilities. It’s amazing that we even survive!
It’s like part of gets lost in all this. Every time something happens, every time we get pulled, some thing gets lost in us. Maybe a little bit of our humanness. A little bit of who we are.
Which brings me to another thought. One a little less discouraging.
I’ve been reflecting on the opening chapter of Ephesians the last couple of weeks. And I’ve been caught up with Paul’s use of the word “saints.”
“This letter is from Paul, chosen by God to be an apostle of
Jesus Christ. I am writing to the saints in Ephesus, who are
faithful followers of Jesus Christ. Ephesians 1:1.
“Saints.” He uses it over seven times in his letter.
Saints are holy people. People who are set apart. Saints are people who have been touched by God. People who have God living with them.
Saints are not a special class of believers. It’s not like Paul was saying there’s the amazing “saints” who are almost perfect and stuff, and then there’s us low-life’s trying to scrap by each day. No he calls us all saints. Everyone of us. And the reason he does is because of what Christ has done.
We are saints—special people, people touched by God, loved by God, valued by God—not because of what we did or didn’t do this week. Not because we especially feel on top of our spiritual game. No, we are simply “saint’s” because Christ changes us. We’re his. We’ve been marked by Him now. And God loves us. Nothing can take that away. Nothing can change that.
Saints is all of us (I know, bad english). It’s even us on bad days. Days when we feel like we’ve lost a bit of ourselves.
So that’s who you are—Saint Tania. Saint Perry. Saint Colin. Saint Berby. Saint Mark. Saint Ruth. Saint Sarah. Saint Marian. Saint Patricia. Saint Amy. Saint Thais. Saint Steve… you get the idea.
The weight of living may be heavy, but the touch of God’s grace is greater. Remember—you’ve been sainted! RDS.
